Biostatistics is an area of research in which new statistical methods for collecting, analyzing and interpreting data arising from medical and epidemiological research are developed and evaluated. Applicants to this field should have a mathematical statistics background and hold a degree from a department of statistics, mathematics or applied mathematics.

This degree is offered as a Collaborative Graduate Program in Biostatistics with the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences. Completion of a degree will result in the awarding of an MSc or PhD in Epidemiology & Biostatistics (Biostatistics), reflecting the strength of training in theoretical as well as applied biostatistics, in conjunction with core knowledge in epidemiology.

Requirements

  • 4 year honors (or equivalent) in Mathematics, Statistics or other quantitative discipline
  • 80% over the last 2 years (full-time) or 20 half credits (part-time).
  • The Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Minimum acceptable score is 90-92 for the internet version with no individual score below 20. [Western's TOEFL ID is 0984].
  • The International English Language Testing Service (IELTS). Minimum acceptable score is 6 out of 9 with no individual score below 6.
  • 2 letters of reference
  • A statement of academic interest
  • An official copy of all postsecondary institutions attended
