Euroin Classical Cultures (EMCC)

The EuroIn Classical Cultures program at the University of Münster offers a comprehensive interdisciplinary education focused on the study of ancient civilizations, their languages, literature, history, and cultural heritage. This program aims to provide students with a deep understanding of classical antiquity, emphasizing the interconnectedness of the Greek and Roman worlds and their enduring influence on modern European culture. Throughout the course of study, students engage with original texts in Latin and Greek, exploring literary works, philosophical treatises, and historical documents that have shaped Western civilization. The curriculum combines language acquisition with cultural studies, allowing students to develop both linguistic proficiency and interpretative skills necessary for analyzing primary sources and secondary literature. Additionally, students learn about art, archaeology, and cultural history, gaining insight into the material aspects of ancient societies, including architecture, sculpture, and daily life. The program promotes critical thinking, analytical abilities, and a nuanced understanding of cultural developments over time. Students have opportunities for participating in archaeological fieldwork, internships, and study exchanges with partner institutions across Europe. The program prepares graduates for careers in education, research, museum work, cultural management, and related fields. It also provides a solid foundation for advanced study and doctoral research in classical studies, philology, ancient history, or related disciplines. Emphasizing a multidisciplinary approach, the EuroIn Classical Cultures program at Münster combines rigorous academic training with innovative teaching methods, including seminars, workshops, and digital humanities projects. Graduates emerge equipped with valuable skills in research, interpretation, and communication, preparing them for diverse professional paths connected to the rich heritage of the classical world.

Educational organisation

The study programme is subdivided into three study areas:

• Core Modules
• Advanced Modules
• Extension Modules

Further elements are interdisciplinary compact courses and a placement phase.

The core modules comprise three main subjects: Ancient History, Classical Philology and Archaeology plus a total of five modules which should be selected at a ratio of 2:2:1.
The core modules are split into introductory and speciality modules. The introductory module will impart the basic knowledge for each core module. Since admission to the EMCC programme requires basic expert knowledge for at least two core modules, students may only attend a single introductory module in one core module and should select their speciality modules accordingly. Whether an introductory module in any of the core modules is necessary at all will be decided during the admissions procedure.

The two advanced modules are designed to improve methodological and language skills.

Building on the studies pursued in the core and advanced modules, the extension modules aim at further professionalising the students by expanding geographical and historical knowledge in the pertinent field and by deepening their understanding of methodological problems.

The week-long, interdisciplinary compact course (Blockseminar) will be organised by the local coordinators and will take place once a year at different locations. It provides students with the opportunity to present and discuss the main points of their ongoing Master's thesis internationally.

Attractive Placements:
The placement offers the opportunity to gain hands-on or practice-oriented experience. As a rule, the placements will be organised in cooperation with leading institutions, for instance with one of our partners, the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut.

Each module, with the exception of the interdisciplinary compact course and the placement, is worth 10 ECTS credits to be validated in individual courses, of which a minimum of one course per module must be worth at least five ECTS credits.

Double or Multiple Degree
EMCC graduates will receive the title Master of Arts from each university at which they have attained at least 30 ECTS.

Once a year, an interdisciplinary compact course will be held by several of our EMCC universities. This module gives students the opportunity to discuss their research results and establish international contacts. In 2011, we went to Istanbul. In 2013, we met at the University of Athens.

Internships

The placement module offers the opportunity to gain hands-on or practice-oriented experience. As a rule, the placements will be organised in cooperation with leading institutions, for instance with one of our partners, the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut. Programme advisers will assist students in finding an appropriate internship.

Course objectives

The qualification goals of the programme are: expert knowledge and superior interdisciplinary, problem-oriented, analytical, representational and communicative skills in the field of Classical Studies. These will qualify students for their doctoral thesis (PhD), continued academic work and employment in the cultural sector. Particular emphasis is laid on language skills, intercultural competencies and an awareness of international cooperation in order to provide students with a profound expertise in the European and international employment markets in academia, education and culture.

Language requirements

Verifiable knowledge of the language spoken at the university at which the programme is started is mandatory, as is functional knowledge of two further modern languages (at least one of which is the official language of one of the partner universities). Knowledge of Ancient Greek or Latin is another requirement.

Academic requirements

Bachelor's degree or equivalent in a relevant subject (e.g. Diplom, Staatsexamen for Germany, Laurea for Italy, Licenciatura for Spain, Licence for France and Turkey, Ptychio for Cyprus) with a normal course duration of six semesters (three years). Relevant subjects are in particular Ancient History, Archaeology and Classical Philology.

Enrolment fees

Social semester fee of 240 EUR per semester, including a semester ticket covering public transport for the greater Münster area and the German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia

Costs of living

Approx. 700 EUR per month to cover accommodation, insurance, and personal expenses

Arrival support

Students of the EMCC have their own personal supervisor during their stay in Münster. We are happy to help you to find accommodation and to organise your studies.
Support is also offered in getting to know the "research infrastructure" of Münster with its variety of research institutions and libraries.
Each semester we offer several information and social events, such as excursions to tourist attractions in Münster and the Münsterland, as well as to relevant conferences and colloquia in the field of research of the EMCC.

Services and support for international students

The mentoring programme is a key element in the organisation of the EMCC. Each student will be assigned a personal mentor who is a member of staff at the university at which the student begins the programme. Support will be provided by the local EMCC coordinator.
