This program combines theoretical knowledge with practical application, preparing students for diverse careers in areas such as environmental management, urban planning, geographic information systems (GIS), transportation, and international development. Students will explore various geographical phenomena, analyze spatial data, and develop critical thinking skills to address complex issues related to climate change, resource management, and global interconnectedness.

The curriculum features a wide range of courses covering physical geography, human geography, GIS technology, remote sensing, and environmental sustainability. Students have the opportunity to specialize in areas like urban geography, cultural landscapes, climate science, or geopolitical studies, tailoring their education to align with their career interests. The program emphasizes experiential learning through fieldwork, research projects, and internships, enabling students to acquire practical skills and professional experience.

Faculty members are experts in their fields, actively engaged in research that advances understanding of spatial relationships and environmental challenges. The program also encourages interdisciplinary approaches, integrating insights from geology, anthropology, economics, and political science. Graduates of the Geography program at UB are well-equipped to pursue graduate studies or enter the workforce directly, with a solid foundation in spatial analysis, data interpretation, and societal issues.

Whether students aim to work in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, private industry, or academia, the Geography program at UB provides a rigorous academic environment and numerous opportunities for professional development. Graduates leave prepared to analyze, solve, and communicate complex geographical problems, contributing to sustainable development and informed decision-making worldwide."

  • The program typically requires one to two years of full-time study, although students can pursue the degree on a part-time basis. The department highly encourages students to consider internships to expand their learning experience.
  • Throughout their studies, students work closely with two faculty members who provide guidance and supervision. Students may either choose a concentration or in consultation with his/her adviser, design a program of study that corresponds with the student’s interests and satisfies the general requirements of the M.A. program. Students can pick one of the following concentrations or pursue a general M.A. degree (30 credits) as long as the required courses are taken: GEO 500, GEO 501, and GEO 505.
  • The M.A. program requires 30 credit hours and completion of either a research project or competency portfolio. Students will select their option in consultation with their advisor.

GRE requirements:

There is no mandatory university minimum, but our department uses a guideline of 300 (combined verbal and quantitative) and 313 is required for funding consideration.
