After your first year of German at Carleton, you will have the oral proficiency to live and study in a German-speaking country. Our programs in Berlin, and Vienna, offer choices in location. Since the fall of the Wall and the establishment of the European Union as an economic and political power, the question of German identity has again come to the forefront. Its philosophical and literary foundations are crucial to an understanding of the country. You will gain the skills to read important writers and thinkers in the original German: Goethe, Schiller, Kafka, Rilke, Mann, Freud, Brecht, Christa Wolf, Ingeborg Bachmann.
