The Leiden University Institute for History has a wide-reaching academic scope. This one-year master's programme is an accurate reflection of this academic range and offers you the chance to obtain a degree based on your own particular interests and ambitions. The wide range of chairs in history which include most European and non-European areas, combined with the archive material available in Leiden University and in The Hague makes a study of nearly all areas of the world an option.

Specialities:
Ancient History:
In this specialisation you will study the history of the Greek and Roman period, with a focus on the history of the mentality and the social and economic history in the period 400 B.C. - 400 A.D.
Europaeum programme European History and Civilisation: Leiden-Oxford-Paris Programme:
This unique specialisation is jointly offered by Leiden University, Université Paris I - Panthéon/Sorbonne and the University of Oxford. You will spend a trimester at each institution.
Migration and Global Interdependence:
This specialisation focuses on issues such as migration, integration, discrimination, citizenship, social cohesion and civil society from a historical and geographical comparative perspective.
Europe 1000-1800:
This specialisation focuses on the momentous cultural and political transformations that characterised the period between 1300-1700.
Political Culture and National Identities:
In this specialisation you will explore the political culture and national identity of a number of European countries (from c. 1800 to the present day).
Archival Studies:
In this specialisation you will acquire the knowledge and skills of a professional archivist in order to be able to provide users of historical archives with professional guidance.
Colonial and Global History:
This specialisation, which has a strong international appeal, explores the dynamic interaction between civilisations in global history.
