Human Geography

Intertwined spatial developments of urbanisation and globalisation processes are central to the Human Geography curriculum.

As a Human Geography student, you will explore sociospatial dynamics at different geographical scales from different perspectives. Core challenges investigated in the programme include urban inequality, demographic changes, regional economic disparities, geopolitical conflicts and identities, uneven development as well as environmental issues. In the context of urban and political geographies, the programme offers a broad range of geographical sub-disciplines and skills to engage with the multi-scalar character of social, political, economic and cultural processes, and the associated spatial structures. Current socio-spatial relations are studied in several domains (social, economic, political, cultural and environmental) through the lenses of space, place and scale. Accordingly, the programme includes core courses on geographical theories, ethics and methodologies, research methods and various thematic courses which enable students to explore the multiple dimensions of contemporary challenges and phenomena. Within the programme in Human Geography, students can compose their own geographical profile through the selected thematic courses and thesis project.

The programme consists of three compulsory courses:

• Geographical theories an geography in society
  (6 EC)
• Geographical research methods & GIS (9 EC)
• Literature course (3 EC)

Students have to choose one course out of two:

• Social challenges in cities (6 EC)
• Territories, identities and conflict in a changing world order (6 EC)

Students have to choose two out of three courses:

• Globalisation, cities, network (6 EC)
• Governance of commons, resources and environmental conflict (6 EC)
• Development geography (6 EC)

The programme is completed with:

• Master thesis project (24 EC)

Fulfilling all of the requirements will normally take 12 months. Upon successful completion of the programme, the student will receive a Masters degree in Human Geography and the title Master of Science (MSc).

Thesis

Students complete the Master's programme Human Geography with a masterthesis to demonstrate their knowledge of different geographical theories and research skills. The topics should be related to the geographical specialisation courses the University of Amsterdam offers. For the thesis, fieldwork can be carried out abroad.

Language

The whole programme is in English language, although Dutch students have the right to do their exams in Dutch language since this programme is Dutch accredited.

Degree requirements

The MSc in Human Geography is awarded upon completion of 60 ECTS credits, including all required courses in the curriculum and a written Master's thesis, which is based on an independent research project.
