Description

Mechanical Engineering Department at Ozyegin University will start accepting student to its undergraduate program in the 2010-2011 academic year. Among all the engineering disciplines, Mechanical Engineering is known to be one of the most fundamental ones. OzU Mechanical Engineering program is established to teach how to design and build various devices, mechanisms, and processes and how to utilize them in various applications. This elaborate education program is to prepare its graduates to evaluate complicated tasks and problems and come up with detailed and involved solutions. The graduates of the Mechanical Engineering program are expected to start their professional life right after their graduation. They will be capable of working in various sectors of industry, including manufacturing, construction, communications, automotive, information and bio technologies, medicine as well as financial sectors. Traditional mechanical engineering education in the world universities is established on teaching all the functional details of mechanisms, machines, and systems. The basis of this education are the techniques of is visual design and physical manufacturing. The expectations from the mechanical engineers in the 21st century will be shaped based on the advances in the technology and the priorities of the society at large, therefore should be dynamic and responsive. The Mechanical Engineering program at Ozyegin University aims to educate mechanical engineers who are focused on modern subjects and experienced in new technologies. In addition to providing an education based on the fundamental concepts, the program will also emphasize on micro- and nano-technologies and the principles of micro- and nano-scale engineering. Another critical field that the mechanical engineers have to know very well is materials science. OzU ME is based on an educational curriculum which teaches how to integrate the advanced materials to new mechanisms, machines and systems for engineering purposes. The OzU ME faculty are chosen specifically on this fields, and they are uniquely qualified to teach these cutting-edge concepts to its students. The applications of mechanical engineering are very broad and cover many pressing needs of industry and the society. Among them, energy applications have recently gained significant importance. Currently there is a need for qualified engineers who can work on energy related fields with technical and management skills, and this trend is likely to continue next decade. One of the main focus of the Mechanical Engineering program at Ozyegin University is being energy, including energy harvesting through advanced engineering design, and applications of solar and wind power. The students who minor in these subjects will have the experience and confidence to work in these rapidly growing sectors.

The two main focuses of the modern engineering education are the research and industrial experience provided throughout the undergraduate program. Students at OzU ME program will participate in the research projects of the faculty members within the Department. Also, they will be encouraged to intern in the industry. Those who choose energy will be in contact with the Center of Energy, Economy and Environment (CEEE) for their research and internships. CEEE is already in close relationships with the industry, public organizations and municipalities in Istanbul. Those who choose to focus on micro- and nano-technologies and on advanced materials will also be paired with different research groups and industrial sectors. All the faculty members at the ME department are involved in research projects on nanotechnology, and they are actively supported by the European Union FP-7 Programs and TUBITAK. The ME students will benefit from all these existing opportunities in the Department starting from their first day at Ozyegin University.
