PEMM is a degree-granting program that encompasses five broad overlapping disciplines:

Biomedical Physiology

Cancer Biology & Molecular Therapeutics

Cardiovascular Diseases

Molecular Pharmacology, Toxicology & Experimental Therapeutics

Neuroscience

This graduate program seeks to train the next generation of scientists and physician-scientists to engage in research in genomic, proteomic, cellular, and organ-based systems for the purpose of translating this knowledge into disease treatment and prevention. Research carried out by faculty and trainees in this program will use the most advanced experimental approaches to understand the pathophysiology of disease and to develop new diagnostics and therapeutics. Students will have the opportunity to be mentored by faculty within both the basic and clinical sciences. The research will employ a broad range of biochemical, biological, and molecular techniques, and will interface with related disciplines such as biostatistics, bioinformatics, structural biology, and chemistry. All students will be given thorough instruction in the fundamentals of cell biology, molecular biology, physiology and pathophysiology, pharmacology, and human genetics. In addition, there will be special courses on designing, implementing and analyzing clinical trials. Thus, this program is expected to provide students with a broad-based understanding of key biomedical problems and to develop their ability to carry out creative biomedical research.

  • UNSG 100/PEMM 124 - Ethical and Responsible Conduct of Research (UNSG 100 for Fall term and PEMM 124 for Winter Term)

Year 2/3

  • PEMM 103 - Biostatistics
  • PEMM 137 - Qualifying Exam
  • Additional elective courses 

Students will select a laboratory for their thesis research by the end of the first year (June 1).

All Years

  • PEMM 297, 298, 299 (1 - 3 credits respectively; 3 credits is full time). Thesis Research in the PEMM program
  • Attendance and participation in weekly journal clubs, research-in-progress, and related seminars.

ELECTIVES: All students are required to complete 4 elective course equivalents (note several courses are equivalent to 2 electives). The primary electives should be in the area of the anticipated thesis research. There are many other elective courses offered within PEMM or other programs and departments within the College. An outline of the plan for electives must be developed with the selected thesis advisor and advisory committee.

Neuroscience

  • PEMM 115 - DMS Year 1 Neuroscience course with supplemental experimental neuroscience section (2 course equivalent)

Basic requirements for admission:

  • Bachelor's degree with adequate preparation in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, physics and mathematics
  • Demonstrated proficiency with the English language
  • Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores and TOEFL or IELTS scores (international students only), to the Graduate Studies office. The institution code is 3351 for Dartmouth.
  • At least three (3) letters of recommendation
  • All official academic transcripts
  • A completed Dartmouth College application for graduate study
  • Application Fee of $75 US payable to Dartmouth College payable by credit card

Only students who intend to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D.-Ph.D. degree full time will be accepted and could thus become eligible for candidacy for a degree in PEMM. After review of completed application materials by the Admissions Committee, selected applicants will be invited for a required on site interview. 

Additional Information for International Applicants 
International applications should note that we are unable to reimburse for international travel expenses. On rare occasions, we may be able to interview applicants at an international location if a department faculty member is traveling abroad at an appropriate time.

All PEMM students (regardless of country of origin) receive a Dartmouth Fellowship that provides a full tuition scholarship, a prepaid health insurance plan, and a student stipend.
