Description

Our BSc Social Psychology and Sociology examines how people function in society from a number of different perspectives, both theoretical and applied. We cover a variety of topics and issues in social psychology and sociology, using diverse approaches from both disciplines. Research methods covered reflect the breadth of our programme and include qualitative methods, survey research methods, experimental methods and evaluation methods.

Our programme aims:
1. To provide a critical understanding of the different disciplines relevant to human social activity;
2. To enable you to understand and collect evidence using research methods including questionnaire surveys, interviews and controlled studies;
3. To enable you to carry out an extensive piece of independent research including: planning, formulating, designing, choosing research methods, collecting data, analysing, interpreting and writing-up;
4. To develop your understanding of current debates and discussions about the nature of social and scientific knowledge; and
5. To provide an understanding of the relationships between relevant academic theories and practice in social care and health professions.
Graduates will be well placed to pursue a career in a health setting, such as clinical or counselling work, personnel or management, occupational therapist or occupational psychology. Our programme can also form the basis for fast-track graduate conversion within our School into nursing (adult and mental health), occupational therapy, physiotherapy, and speech and language therapy, or British Psychological Society (BPS) graduate membership in psychology. You will also be well placed to obtain jobs working in the health and social care sector, such as health promotion, management, research and development, IT and audit.

Funding

For home and EU students your main source of funding will be government loans, as well as University bursaries and scholarships.

While international students may be eligible for some scholarships, as well as additional funding from charities and trusts, it is imperative that you do not travel to the UK or begin your studies without ensuring you have enough money to cover all fees and living expenses. It is virtually impossible to make arrangements for financial support once you have left your home country, while the immigration authorities are unlikely to allow you UK entry unless you have evidence that you can cover the costs of your study.
