Description

The program in art, design, and art history offers two different degrees, a bachelor of fine arts (B.F.A.) in art (often referred to as a professional degree) and a bachelor of arts (B.A.) in art (commonly referred to as a liberal arts degree). Within the B.F.A. degree, a student may define an area of specialization in fine art or graphic design, and within the B.A. degree, students may specialize in fine art, graphic design, or art history. The difference between these two degrees is the overall balance between the general education requirements and the number of classes taken within the chosen area of specialization. The B.A. degree is evenly balanced between general education courses and the area of specialization, while the B.F.A. is more heavily weighted towards the area of specialization.

The Visual Arts department provides both disciplinary focus and an environment for interdisciplinary exploration, as well as access to the rich intellectual resources of a major research institution. This breadth enables students to graduate with the skills and thinking necessary for careers in today’s diverse and changing art world. B.F.A., B.A., and M.F.A. degrees in Visual Arts are offered with undergraduate concentrations in Design, Drawing, Media, Painting, Photography, Print, and Sculpture. Proximity to New York and Philadelphia gives students access to a faculty of renowned professional artists and designers, prestigious museums and galleries, visiting artists and critics, and profoundly affects the exchange of ideas within the Visual Arts department. Visual Arts graduates become professional artists and designers, and work in creative environments such as museums, galleries, schools, and universities and industries including film, television and advertising.

  • Work-study allows students to earn money for college expenses while gaining valuable skills - often in their intended field.

  • More than 175 Rutgers research centers support pioneering work in stem cells, climate change, DNA analysis, and more.
