Applied Learning

An educational strategy known as "applied learning" involves having students use their newfound knowledge of concepts, ideas, and models in real-world situations. Students put the knowledge and abilities they have learned in the traditional classroom to use in practical and/or real-world situations, creative projects, or independent or guided research. They then apply what they have learned from the practical experience to their academic studies. The applied learning activity may take place outside of the typical classroom setting, or it may be included within a program or course of study.

There are multiple methods and possibilities for students who choose this as their degree program:

• Internship

Internships are supervised, short-term, agreed-upon working experiences that allow students to receive academic credit. Can be full- or part-time, on or off campus, paid or unpaid, and for credit or non-credit bearing, and can be tied to a student's major or area of interest.

• Clinical Internship

The time when students work under the supervision of faculty members in health care and community organizations, focusing on specific patients, clients, or groups that represent various settings.

• Practicum

A time frame during which one engages in practical or field experience in educational, professional, or community settings, agencies, or organizations as a part of a course of study.

• Rich Clinical Practice

In order to acquire the abilities, knowledge, and understanding necessary to become teachers, candidate teachers engage in a variety of school- and community-based activities that integrate theory and practice.

• Service-Learning

A credit-bearing educational technique that incorporates significant volunteer work with class instruction and reflection to improve communities and foster learning.

• Public Service

Volunteering and community service are carried out by students for the good of the community. This service may or may not be combined with a specific course of study.

• Civic Engagement

By incorporating relevant civic education and activities into courses or programs, civic engagement focuses teaching and learning on training students as global citizens.

• Original Works

A senior project, performance, or other type of creative work that is completed by a student as part of an accredited class, program, or course of study.

• Research

A student's original intellectual or creative contribution to the discipline through scholarly and/or creative inquiry or investigation that increases our understanding.

• Entrepreneurship

Students in entrepreneurship programs learn a broad range of entrepreneurial skills that are applicable to any type of firm. They discover new opportunities and then use them to add value.

• Field Research

Information gathering outside of a lab or experimental setting, frequently done in a natural environment or setting. Inquiry, design, investigation, discovery, and application are among the project types.

• Study Away

An educational program offered somewhere other than the home institution, whether it is domestically or abroad. It could be a semester-long or intersession academic sequence.
