College of Law
In pursuit of a vision to embed the rule of law in Qatar’s development, Decree No. 4 was issued in 1993 to establish an academic department of legal education. Legal studies was originally part of the College of Sharia and Islamic Studies. As the country’s development gathered momentum, the need for expansion in legal education became inevitable, hence the establishment of an autonomous College of Law in 2006.
In about a decade of this bold decision, the College of Law has grown exponentially. The current student population is about 800 with faculty strength of 50 highly educated and diverse academics supported by a team of highly motivated administrative staff. A range of programs have been introduced to enrich the curriculum and achieve the college’s mission. These include the Center for Energy and Sustainability Law to serve as platform for engagement with industry, Externship program to give our students a taste of practical work prior to graduation, a Legal Writing program that advances the writing and research skills of our students, clinics in Domestic Violence, Human Rights, Environment and many other initiatives.
Our teaching methods, curricula and research programs have been revamped resulting in over a million dollar research grants, engagement with the community and industry and the graduation of high quality students. In tandem with this growth, a new bespoke multi-purpose building, including a law library and moot courtrooms, is being erected exclusively for the Law College. The college is also poised to start new graduate programs in both Arabic and English.

Together, we are making this college a success -- and an academic program this country can be proud of.
In 1973, Qatar’s first national College of Education was founded by decree of the Emir of Qatar, in his vision to place education as a priority in the country’s expansion. Among a small population, the College admitted a respectable 57 male and 93 female students in its first year.
The country’s rapid development highlighted the need for the College’s expansion, to provide additional areas of specialization in line with the requirements of the population. Therefore, in 1977, Qatar University was founded with four new colleges; Education, Humanities & Social Sciences, Sharia, Law & Islamic Studies, and Science. From there, the institution rapidly expanded, with the founding of the College of Engineering in 1980 and College of Business in 1985. In addition, it originally supported several small independent research centers, and worked to establish a national community college; the College of Technology.
Following the establishment of Education City and the Qatar Foundation in 1996, a new era of competitive options for local institutions of higher education began, and Qatar University’s functions and services were re-evaluated. In 2003, the University embarked on an ambitious Reform Plan to increase the efficiency of its administrative and academic processes. To this end, a university-wide Strategic Plan 2010-2013 was launched, incorporating Key Performance Areas which focused on promoting quality education and efficient and effective services.
