Study programs in New Zealand

New Zealand is a small country, but it attracts thousands of international students every year to study in one of its universities because of quality of education, magnificent nature of this country and new culture experience. There are eight universities in the New Zealand, as well as 18 technology institutions and more than 600 training schools. While country is quite small (the total population is less than 5 million), the quality of education is very high: five universities in the New Zealand are included in QS World University rankings with one of them – University of Auckland – placed among the top-100. Given the small size of the country this is a pretty serious accomplishment.

The education system in the New Zealand looks like Australian's. There are three main stages: Bachelor, Master and Doctoral studies. Bachelor degree typically takes three years of study and one additional year for “Honours” programs, which is dedicated for those who want to pursue an academic career. However, several Bachelor programs in New Zealand takes for years even without Honours year – it depends on area of study as well as on university's specific requirements. Master degree could be obtained in one or two years, and after that students could start their doctoral studies. 8 universities in New Zealand provide all types of programs. 18 Institutes of Technology and Polytechnics are usually more focused, but have not only degree, but also vocational and short-term programs. Doctoral programs are realized bot in universities and in some of the Institutes of technology. In order to obtain a PhD degree, students typically have to study for 3-5 years.
