Cognitive science involves the study of cognition, perception, and emotion from a wide range of perspectives. Despite the many methodologies they use, cognitive scientists are united in their interest in the mind — and the brain.
Cognitive Science program is dedicated to understanding the nature of minds and other intelligent systems. The program is highly integrated, encouraging collaboration between many participating disciplines.
What Is Cognitive Science?
Cognitive science is the study of the human mind and brain, focusing on how the mind represents and manipulates knowledge and how mental representations and processes are realized in the brain.
Conceiving the mind as an abstract computing device instantiated in the brain, cognitive scientists endeavor to understand the mental computations underlying cognitive functioning and how these computations are implemented by neural tissue.
Cognitive science has emerged at the interface of several disciplines. Central among these are cognitive psychology, linguistics, and portions of computer science and artificial intelligence; other important components derive from work in the neurosciences, philosophy, and anthropology.
What is this program about?
The Research program aims to train you to become an expert in your specific subfield of the Brain and Cognitive Sciences, with a clear understanding and appreciation of the contribution made by the other subfields. All students complete a core curriculum next to their chosen direction within the program in Brain and Cognitive Sciences.
The Cognitive Science Program reflects the intersecting, interdisciplinary interests of affiliated faculty and students, as well as participating faculty from several additional departments (incl. Electrical & Computer Engineering, Sociology, and Counseling Clinical & School Psychology).
The Program provides an organizational structure that facilitates sharing of research interests and collaboration among faculty, departments, and students.
Degree levels of Cognitive Science education program
The interdisciplinary Bachelor’s program integrates the study of artificial intelligence with the study of human cognition. The program offers a balanced mix of theory and practice and includes courses on programming, Machine learning, and Deep learning.
The 2-year Master's program combines knowledge of cognitive science and artificial intelligence with techniques such as advanced deep learning. You will investigate various aspects of intelligence, such as reasoning, learning, perception, communication, and collaboration from both a human perspective and a machine perspective.
The Department of Cognitive Science Ph.D. program’s primary goal is to train a new generation of cognitive scientists who can meld multiple existing disciplines into a new, genuinely integrated science of the mind/brain.
