Gender Studies

Gender studies is an interdisciplinary program usually hosted by Faculty of Social Studies. The main aim of Gender studies is exploring the relationship between gender and differents areas of human’s life, such as law, literature, language, geography, history, political science, sociology, anthropology, cinema, media studies,human development, and medicine. Gender studies as a discipline can be conditionally subdivided to women’s studies, men’s studies and queer studies, but all these subdisciplines are closely related to each other.

One of the central questions of gender studies is the connection and the difference between gender and sex.

Because of  interdisciplinary nature of gender studies students can choose the emphasis of their study and research work by themselves, whether it is gender in arts, or gender in society, or gender in culture, or gender in law and politics.

Some universities provide a course of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Studies (LGBTS) as a part of gender studies.

What does the program include?

Most universities make Gender Studies programs rather flexible. Students often can choose from a variety of different modules and additional courses, so they make their study program by themselves, according to their research interests. The suggested modules often include the following disciplines: Gender Studies Research Placement, Feminist Film Theory, Gender and the Labour Market, Public Affairs and Advocacy, Advanced Readings in Gender Studies,the Female Gothic, Queer Gothic.

How to apply for Gender Studies?

Usually the applicants for BA in Gender Studies are not asked for special skills or knowledge. As almost every course is read in English, students should speak English fluently and prove it with language proficiency certificates such as TOEFL, IELTS, etc. Good honors degree (upper second class or first class) are sometimes required.

Applicants for MA or PhD in Gender Studies are usually required to hold a degree in Gender Studies or related field (Sociology, Arts and Humanities, etc). All students from abroad need to meet the visa requirements if they wish to study in another country.

The length of program

It is noticeable that Gender Studies MA are often short-term programs and last for 12 months, but standart 24-months programs in Gender Studies can be found too. Bachelor programs in Gender Studies often last 4 years, and PhD programs - 3 years.

A lot of universities provide scholarships for outstanding foreign students, based on academic merit and financial situation.
