Student life @IUBH

How much does it cost to live in Germany?

The currency in Germany is the Euro. Many other currencies (in 2012) have appreciated in value against the Euro which means that Germany offers good value for your money.

Compared to other European countries, Germany offers excellent value for money in accommodation, food, services and entertainment. The price of food, accommodation, clothing and cultural activities is close to the European average, but below the average found in the major cities of France, Italy or the UK.

The German government calculates that a student needs around € 800 per month to live comfortably. Surveys among international students in Germany have shown that some can live quite happily on € 600 per month.

Some prices in Germany:

  • 1 loaf of bread € 1.50 - € 3.00
  • 1 kg of apples € 2.00
  • 1 kg of potatoes € 1.00
  • 1 litre of milk € 0.50 - € 1.00
  • 1 bottle of mineral water (0.75 litre) € 0.30
  • 1 cup of coffee at a café € 2.50, in the Dallmayr lounge on campus € 1.30
  • 1 glass of beer at a pub (0.3 litre) € 2.00 - € 3.00
  • 1 pair of shoes € 30 to € 100
  • 1 T-shirt € 7 to € 50
  • 1 pair of trousers € 30 to € 100
  • 1 cinema ticket (student price) € 4 to € 8
  • 1 theatre ticket (student price) € 6 to € 30
  • 1 ticket to the museum (student price) € 2 to € 8

Health Care

Health insurance is mandatory in Germany. All international students are required to have sufficient health insurance for the complete duration of their studies in Germany. Due to IUBH regulations you can only be enroled if you can prove health insurance coverage.
German public health insurance
Students can choose from special offers for students under the age of 31 in Germany. These insurance plans are offered at a rate of ~79,- € per month. Although they offer slightly different services, they all cover medical treatment and partially cover medication. Due to cost-saving programmes in the public health insurance, coverage has been reduced and you may have to pay for some medical treatments yourself.

Applying for German health insurance has to be done upon arrival in Germany.

Exception: If you are more than 30 years old you can no longer take advatage of the favourable student rates offered by the public health insurance carriers. In this case you can take advantage of our exclusive offer for international IUBH students, please see below.

The Student Support Package includes the following services:

Due to a special contract with the insurance company Care Concept, negotiated by IUBH and a private insurance company, IUBH students have an exclusive offer which we recommend.

The Student Support Package for international students:

  • private insurance optimized for the needs of international students
  • liability insurance, mandatory for accommodation on campus
  • airport pickup upon your arrival in Cologne (CGN) or Düsseldorf (DUS)
  • IUBH´s network of English speaking physicians
  • IUBH takes care of administration between insurance and physicians
  • 75,-€ per month

Why should I study at the IUBH?

On-campus study, practical approach, ideal career prospects – there are many reasons for studying at the IUBH:

International focus

The heart of the IUBH is its uncompromising international focus:

  • All courses in English
  • Students and professors from more than 100 nations
  • Optional second foreign language during your studies, e.g. Spanish, French, Chinese, Russian or Arabic
  • Integrated, six-month internship, also abroad
  • Study at a partner university abroad for one year and obtain a double degree (in Germany and abroad)

Global career

Whether in a medium-sized company operating at an international level, or in a multinational group abroad – the IUBH offers ideal preparation for the global job market:

  • Approximately 75% of our graduates work in an international environment
  • Approximately 33% of them actually work abroad

Practical approach

Our professors and lecturers attach great importance to a close link between theory and practice. After all, most of them gained experience at international level themselves – and would also like to pass this on, for example through:

  • case studies, projects and internships
  • field trips to well-known companies
  • dialogues with recognised business leaders within the framework of regular IUBH Business Talks

Ideal learning environment

For most people who come to us, beginning university means the start of a new phase in their lives. This is why we attach such great importance to the learning atmosphere:

  • small (personal) class sizes
  • modern seminar rooms and professional technology
  • cafés and restaurants directly on the campus (in Bad Honnef and Bad Reichenhall)
  • comfortable university halls of residence (in Bad Honnef and Bad Reichenhall)
  • wide range of leisure activities thanks to sports teams and societies organised by the students themselves

The managers of tomorrow

Practical, international orientation and study content tailored to the industries in question – our graduates are in demand among companies in Germany and abroad:

  • about 87% of our graduates begin their careers within three months of graduation
  • after two years on the job, 80% of them have already obtained a management position
  • our graduates also report an average annual rise in salary of 10%, so that after five years they earn about 50% more than when they started out in their careers

Valuable contacts and a top-class network

As well as talent and hard work, a good education and a certain knowledge of your sector, there is another important factor in starting your career successfully – good contacts and a good network:

  • department heads and lecturers have numerous contacts in industry
  • at the annual "Career Day" recruiting fair, you can make valuable contacts on the campus to improve your career prospects
  • you will often be able to find internships and entry-level positions during your studies thanks to the IUBH network
