    EMARO, European Master on Advanced RObotics, is an integrated Masters course conducted by three European institutions and three Asian institutions :
    * Ecole Centrale de Nantes- France (coordinator),
    * Warsaw University of Technology - Poland ,
    * University of Genova - Italy,
    * Asian Institute of Technology - Thailand,
    * Faculty of Science and Technology in Keio University - Japan,
    * Shanghai Jiao Tong University - China

    EMARO has been designed and accepted in the framework of the European Union ERASMUS-MUNDUS programme. The Erasmus Mundus programme is a cooperation and mobility programme of the European Union in the field of higher education which promotes the European Union as a center of excellence in learning around the world. It aims to enhance quality in European higher education and to promote intercultural understanding through co-operation with third-countries See more on the Erasmus Mundus web site. EMARO has been successfully implemented over a five-year period (2008-2012) with funding from the Erasmus Mundus Programme, and re-applied for funding in 2013. However, as a result of the highly competitive nature of the selection and the limited budget available, this course was not re-selected.

    As a consequence no Erasmus Mundus scholarships will be available for the 2014/2015 intake. As EMARO has demonstrated high quality throughout, and has therefore been awarded by the European Commission/EACEA an Erasmus Mundus Brand Name (EMBN) by which it commits itself to maintain the requirements and level of excellence expected from an Erasmus Mundus Masters Course. Only six Master courses have obtained this Brand. Candidate students interested in participating in EMARO for the 2014-2015 academic year will find partial scholarships offered by the consortium of EMARO.

    Objectives:

    The Masters is designed to promote a high-quality educational offer in the area of advanced and intelligent robotics. After graduation the students will have mastered the different areas of robotics (Mathematical modeling, Control Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical design) in order to be able to deal with Robotics systems as a whole rather than just to concentrate on one particular area.

    The career prospects for EMARO graduates are very good as the proposed courses are relevant to todays high technology society and because the current output of universities is insufficient to meet the demands of industry and research programmes. Students may take the master as a professional terminal degree, or join PhD programmes afterwards.

    Duration and mobility:

    The programme of study lasts two academic years (120 ECTS) split into four equally loaded semesters. The student has to spend the first two semesters in one European institution and the second two semesters in another European institution. Another mobility during the ourth semester to an Asian partner is possible.

    Summary of study programme:

    The language of instruction is English, but local language and culture courses of the hosting countries are included in the programme of study. The aim of the first two semesters is to provide the students with a solid interdisciplinary background across the main areas of robotics (Cognition, Action, Perception). During the third semester, depending on the host institution, the student will deal with one or more of the following sectors: industrial robot systems, service robots (domestic, health, rehabilitation, leisure), and space and security robots. The fourth semester is dedicated to the Masters Thesis. The student carries out his/her research work under the joint supervision of two advisors from two different consortium institutions.

    Degrees awarded:

    Students that graduate from the EMARO masters course will obtain two masters degrees from the European institutions where they studied. The obtained degrees are officially recognised and give full access to PhD study programmes.

    The Consortium will deliver Diploma supplement describing the nature, level, context, content and status of the studies that were pursued and successfully completed by the student.

    Structure of the programme
    The duration of the EMARO Masters course is two academic years (120 ECTS credits). Each year is split into two semesters with 30 ECTS credits for each. The language of instruction and examination is English. The student will stay the first year in one institution and the second year in an another institution.

    The first year (60 ECTS credits)

    The aim of the first year (M1), is to provide the students with a solid interdisciplinary background across the main areas of robotics: Perception (vision, sensors, signal processing), Cognition (computer science, artificial intelligence, and neural networks), Action (kinematics, dynamics, automatic control), and Mathematical Foundations (modelling, simulation, and optimisation). The first year will be opened simultaneously in the three institutions with the same programme. To exploit the full potential of the complementary areas of the expertise available in the consortium, more than 30% of the modules in each institution will be taught by staff from the other institutions. The structure of the first year is shown in Table 1. It consists of two semesters S1 (from September till the end of January) and S2 (from February till the end of June). The first semester starts with two weeks of intensive local language course (French or Polish).

    Summer internship: At the end of the first year, July and August, a summer internship is encouraged but not compulsory.

    The second year (60 ECTS credits)

    The second year, M2, will be opened in all the consortium institutions from September till the end of July. It consists of the third semester S3 (from September till the end of January) and the fourth semester S4 (from February till the end of July). During the third semester, more specialised courses are proposed. The programme of this semester is based on the specific research strengths of the partners institutions (thus varying from partner to partner). The fourth semester is devoted to the Masters Thesis.

    The third semester (30 ECTS credits)

    The third semester (S3) starts with two weeks devoted to the local language of the hosting institution. During these two weeks, the topic of the master thesis will be chosen by the student out of a list of subjects proposed by the staff of the institution (or proposed by the student, however subject to acceptance by the prospective supervisor). The topic of the thesis must correspond to one of the current research activities of the hosting institution. The modules of S3 consist of specialised courses based on the specific research strengths of the partner institutions. During this semester students are also prepared for their work on the dissertation through the participation in the module Research Methodology. This module will let the students learn the necessary tools to carry out and present a research topic, they will study the state of the art of the research subject.

    The fourth semester (30 ECTS credits)

    The fourth semester (S4) is devoted to the Master Thesis, valued for 30 ECTS credits. Each student will be jointly supervised by two advisors from two different institutions. The research topic can be supervised and located in a R&D department of an industrial institution. The research work is finalised by a written dissertation, i.e.the Masters Thesis, which must be done individually and contain an element of original work. The dissertation must be defended in front of a committee of experts. The constitution of this committee and the conditions of the oral presentation will be detailed in the Student Handbook.


    Program requirements

    The masters course applies to European and third country-students who already hold a first university degree with 180 ECTS, after at least three years of university studies (at the level of bachelor of science), in a field related to Robotics area such as: mechatronics, automatic control, computer science, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and applied mathematics. The applicants have to be fluent in writing and reading in English. The admission is decided on the basis of excellence of the academic records of the student, the quality of her/his former studies, motivations, reference letters and general skills for foreign languages. The EMARO Consortium recruits up to 45 students each year, about 15 in each institution. The Professor/student ratio is about 1/2.     Consortium scholarships
    The EMARO Consortium supports high-quality students having excellent academic results from around the world (non European and European) to join EMARO Master course. The application to a consortium scholarship is done through the classical students application procedure of EMARO. The application deadline for these scholarships is 29 March 2014.

    For 2014-2015 academic year applicants, the EMARO consortium will offer the following four types of scholarships for students who send their postal documents before 29 March 2014:

    * 6000 /year for non-European students who are ranked among the top 8 students of category A students.
    * 2000 /year for non-European students ranked on the top 20 student list of category A students.

    * 2000 /year for European students who are ranked among the top 5 students of category B students.
    * 1000 /year for European students ranked on the top 10 students of category B students.

    * around 2500 during the second year of the master for the students who are ranked on the top 50% of their group in the result of the first year of the master and the third semester.

    Selection Procedure

    The selection committee will rank the applicants of each category in a main list and a reserve list. The ranking will take into account the academic performances of the student, the adequation of the field of the B.Sc for EMARO's study, the quality of the home institution, the English level, the motivation letter, and the CV. At most two students from the same country can be selected in the main list. If some students withdraw from the main list, the best students from the reserve list will be upgraded to the main list and will be notified immediately.

    Definition category A, category B

    * Category A student is a student who is not from Europe Union states, Iceland, Norway and Lichtenstein, Turkey, Switzerland, Western Balkan Countries including Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Kosovo, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia and who is not resident nor have carried out their main activity (studies, work, etc.) for more than a total of 12 months over the last five years in one of these countries.
    * Category B student is from the Europe Union states and related countries mentioned in Category A definition, and also for third country students who had a stay for more than 12 months over the last five years in these countries.
